Manchester United could be about to land the perfect replacement for Casemiro, while handing Bruno Fernandes a new partner in crime. INEOS are gearing up for a crucial summer, which will see major decisions made in the managerial and playing departments.
One of the big calls already made has been to let Casemiro leave at the end of his contract, having joined the club just under five years ago from Real Madrid. While the 34-year-old is obviously approaching the end of his career, he has chipped in with some important performances this season, meaning United will have a tough task on their hands landing a ready-made replacement.
One of their mooted options is said to be a player Casemiro knows well, with the Brazilian midfielder having personally recommended him to the United hierarchy. The player in question is Bruno Guimaraes, who arrived at Newcastle in 2022 and has looked at home in the Premier League ever since.
It's being reported by Reuters that talks have started between the relevant parties, and Newcastle's recent thumping against Barcelona in the Champions League could help pave the way for the 28-year-old's exit. Guimaraes is unlikely to want to spend his peak years not challenging for trophies, or given the Magpies' current standing in the table, not playing in the Champions League altogether.
The fee being banded about in the report is a cool £69m, which is by no means a steal, but in the current market for midfielders, can be considered on the cheaper side. However, United could face competition for his signature, not least from La Liga giants, Real Madrid, who are believed to be monitoring the situation.
Los Blancos are reportedly long-term admirers of Guimaraes, with their admiration having stretched back to Carlo Ancelotti's time as manager. The Italian is said to have recommended him to the club as a successor to Luka Modric three years ago, with Real Madrid having planned an approach for the 2022 summer transfer window.
A spanner was thrown in the works when Newcastle swooped in six months earlier during the January transfer window, securing the midfielder's services for around £40m. But that interest hasn't subsided, given Eduardo Camavinga is expected to leave the Bernabeu, with the Spanish side, much like United, in the market for midfield reinforcements.
