South Korean-American singer Rei Ami steals spotlight at Oscars in dress by Vietnamese designer

South Korean-American singer Rei Ami took the stage at the 98th Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday in a sheer white gown created by Vietnamese designer Do Long.

She performed the song “Golden” with singers EJAE and Audrey Nuna.

The gown she wore from Long’s Rhythm collection featured a high-neck crop top hand-embellished with thousands of crystals and a flared A-line tulle skirt.

The designer said he was happy to contribute a Vietnamese design to the “world’s biggest” film event.

The three singers provided the voices for the girl group HUNTR/X in the Netflix film “KPop Demon Hunters”, with Rei Ami voicing the character Zoey.

According to AFPthe film won two Oscars this year for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, making “Golden” the first K-pop song to win an Oscar.

In her acceptance speech, director Maggie Kang dedicated the win to South Korea and Korean communities worldwide.

Rei Ami, 31, is a South Korean-American singer known for performing “Freak”, a track by Sub Urban that went viral on TikTok in 2020.

She launched her music career in 2019 with the debut single “Snowcone” and later gained attention with the hit “Dictator”.

Long, 42, based in HCMC, studied civil engineering before switching to fashion.

Other international artists who have worn his designs include actors Teyana Taylor and Julia Butters and singers Kali Uchis and Cardi B.

He is a single father who is raising infant daughter Do Ngoc Thanh Vy.
