Scooby Doo: Origins is officially full steam ahead at Netflix as the global streaming giant is set to bring one of the most iconic animated franchises of all time to life.

The original cartoon series follows teenage sleuths Fred, Daphne, Shaggy and Velma, as well as their talking dog Scooby, who solve seemingly paranormal mysteries.

Netflix’s upcoming live-action series will tell a new origin story for Mystery Inc. with an exciting new cast bringing them to live.

An official synopsis for the upcoming drama reads: “During their final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder.

“Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever-so-handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”

But who is playing this new version of the Scooby Gang, and where have you seen them before? Let’s take a closer look.

Shaggy Rogers is the laidback, cowardly and food-obsessed member of the gang who is usually considered Scooby’s owner and best friend.

He’ll be played by rising star Tanner Hagen in the Netflix series. The 21-year-old has most prominently appeared in one episode of HBO’s hit medical drama The Pitt, which will be arriving in the UK with the launch of HBO Max on 26th March.

Hagen has also appeared in an episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves and the independent high school film Most Likely, as well as several short films.

Daphne Blake is the popular and glamorous member of Mystery Inc who is often getting herself into danger.

She’ll be played by arguably the most well-known star in the confirmed cast so far, McKenna Grace, 19, who has had both main and supporting roles across a wide range of hit films and TV series.

Grace most recently starred in the latest Scream movie and will appear in the upcoming blockbuster The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping later this year. She is also known for the Ghostbusters films, The Handmaid’s Tale, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, and Regretting You.

Interestingly, Grace has already portrayed Daphne before, voicing a younger version of the character in the animated film Scoob!, where she was primarily voiced by Amanda Seyfried. She also played a young Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film starring Brie Larson.

Fred Jones is the charismatic and athletic leader of the gang who drives the iconic Mystery Machine and usually comes up with the plans and intricate traps to capture the spooky villains.

Actor and musician Maxwell Jenkins, 20, will bring Fred to life in the new series. Scooby Doo is far from Jenkins’ first experience with Netflix, as he has previously appeared in the popular shows Sense8 and Lost in Space, as well as the Prime Video series The Bondsman.

He also has a recurring role as a younger Jack Reacher in the hit adaptation of Lee Child’s thriller novels starring Alan Ritchson.

Velma Dinkley, the brainiest member of the team who is always the first to cast doubt on the paranormal goings-on, will be portrayed by Abby Ryder Fortson.

Fortson, 18, like her co-star Hagen, has also appeared in The Pitt in a recurring role as Kristi Wheeler and, like Grace, appeared in the MCU as a younger version of Cassie Lang, a role which was eventually taken over by Kathryn Newton.

Her most prominent role was in the 2023 adaptation of Judy Blume’s classic novel Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret., opposite Rachel McAdams, Benny Safdie and Kathy Bates.

Scooby Doo: Origins will be released on Netflix. A release date has yet to be confirmed.
