If you order food from the delivery platform Zomato, you are in for a rude shock. The company has decided to increase its platform fee—a move that will now place a heavier burden on your wallet. According to details available on Zomato, the platform fee charged to users has been hiked by ₹2.40. This increase applies to every single order you place; this means that whether you order food once a day or ten times, you will now have to pay more money on each occasion.

Previously, a fee of ₹12.50 was charged per order (excluding GST); however, this charge has now been raised to ₹14.90. It is worth recalling that the last such hike took place in September 2023. After including taxes, Zomato's competitor, Swiggy, is currently charging a platform fee of ₹14.99 per order. Both companies tend to follow similar pricing trends.

Rapido Enters the Food Delivery Business
This latest hike comes at a time when the food delivery sector is witnessing new developments in terms of competition. Urban mobility startup Rapido recently launched its food delivery service, 'Only,' in Bengaluru. The company has clarified that, apart from the standard delivery fee, no additional charges will be levied on either customers or restaurants. This move by Rapido could exert some pressure on incumbent players, particularly given that customers have already expressed concerns regarding the various charges added to their food delivery orders.

Impact on Users
The hike in the platform fee coincides with rising crude oil prices. Higher fuel costs can impact delivery operations, potentially affecting both the restaurants listed on the platform and the delivery partners associated with it. Even as competition within the food delivery sector continues to intensify, for users, this change ultimately translates to paying more money for every order.
