In a thrilling encounter on Friday, New Zealand emerged victorious against South Africa by eight wickets in Auckland. The standout performances included a remarkable bowling display by Lockie Ferguson and a solid half-century from Tom Latham.
This victory gives New Zealand a 2-1 advantage in the five-match series.
South Africa Struggles with Batting
Batting first, South Africa struggled significantly, managing only 136 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Ferguson's exceptional four-over spell, yielding just 9 runs and taking 1 wicket, was a highlight of the match.
During New Zealand's chase, a crucial partnership of 96 runs between Devon Conway and Latham paved the way for an easy win, with 22 balls remaining.
After winning the toss, New Zealand chose to field first. Skipper Mitchell Santner (2 wickets for 21 runs), Ben Sears (2 for 27), and Ferguson (1 for 9) capitalized on South Africa's batting woes, leaving them at a dismal 68 for 6 in just 11.1 overs, with no batsman from the top six scoring more than 20 runs.
A brief resistance came from George Linde, who scored 23 runs off 19 balls, and Gerald Coetzee, who added 16 runs, helping the Proteas surpass the 100-run mark in 14.1 overs.
Nqobani Mokoena's explosive 26 runs off 20 balls, featuring a four and three sixes, lifted South Africa to a total of 136 runs in their 20 overs.
In addition to the leading bowlers, Kyle Jamieson also contributed with 2 wickets for 42 runs, although he faced some late hitting from Mokoena in the final over.
Latham and Conway Lead New Zealand to Success
In their run chase, Conway scored 39 runs off 26 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes, while Latham played a steady innings. By the end of the power play, New Zealand was comfortably placed at 48 runs without losing a wicket.
Spinner Keshav Maharaj (1 for 30) ended the 96-run partnership in the 11th over.
Latham reached his half-century in 45 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes. After a brief contribution from Tim Robinson (17 runs), Latham finished unbeaten on 63 runs from 55 balls, with Nick Kelly remaining not out at 1. New Zealand concluded their innings at 137 for 2 in just 16.2 overs.
