Cricket Ireland has stepped up efforts to secure backing for a proposed ‘Euro Nations Cup’, with chair Brian MacNeice indicating that the tournament could begin as early as 2027. The concept, designed along the lines of a regional competition, is expected to feature European sides such as England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands and Italy. The proposed structure includes both men’s and women’s competitions, with T20 cricket emerging as the likely format.
MacNeice confirmed that discussions have progressed significantly in recent months. While the idea has circulated among stakeholders for some time, Cricket Ireland now believes the proposal has reached a stage where implementation is increasingly feasible. The development was shared during the announcement of Ireland’s 2026 home international schedule, positioning the tournament as part of broader strategic planning for the sport in the region.
Discussions advance, but key stakeholders remain unconfirmed
MacNeice reiterated his personal commitment to the initiative, stating,
"I've had this on the table for discussion with various stakeholders for quite some time. It's something that I'm very passionate about and that I fundamentally believe in."
He added that the concept has evolved through multiple rounds of dialogue, bringing it closer to potential execution.
Despite early engagement with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) during England’s T20I tour of Ireland last year, current indications suggest that the ECB has not been involved in recent discussions. Nevertheless, Cricket Ireland remains in contact with multiple parties linked to the project. MacNeice noted,
"The conversations have now developed and evolved to a point that I'm much more confident that it is going to happen…"
He further clarified that operational details, including format and scheduling, are still under consideration, with announcements expected in the coming months. Broadcasting arrangements have not yet been finalised, though initial expectations point towards market interest once plans are confirmed.

Ireland expands bilateral ties alongside tournament vision
Alongside the tournament proposal, Cricket Ireland also outlined new long-term partnerships with the Emirates Cricket Board and the Cricket Association of Nepal. These agreements will see Ireland’s men’s team engage in regular white-ball series against both UAE and Nepal, strengthening competitive exposure outside traditional circuits.
Additionally, the arrangement includes a provision linking Irish players with the ILT20, where each franchise is set to sign at least one Ireland player from the 2026-27 season onwards. This move is expected to provide further professional opportunities for Irish cricketers while enhancing visibility in franchise leagues.
While the Euro Nations Cup remains under discussion, Cricket Ireland’s parallel efforts suggest a structured approach to expanding its international footprint through both regional tournaments and bilateral collaborations.
