Kumble: Students took part in a sparrow survey across Kumble town to mark World Sparrow Day, interacting with local shopkeepers and observing bird activity in the area.

The programme was organised by the Eco Club of Holy Family School. During the survey, students asked residents about sparrow sightings, their usual locations, and whether their numbers have declined over time.

The activity was guided by bird watcher Raju Kidoor, environmental expert Maxim Rodrigues Kollangana, and bird watcher Sankarsh. Bird enthusiast Usha Kiran was also present.

In a one-hour observation, the team recorded 33 sparrows along with 14 other bird species, including mynas, egrets and other small birds.

The survey was conducted from the school surroundings through market areas up to Kanipura Gopalakrishna Temple, covering grocery shops and fish market areas.

Observers noted that sparrows are commonly found near human settlements where food such as grains and insects is easily available. A local shop owner, Santosh, said sparrows were once more active inside shops when traditional tiled roofs were common, but are now mostly seen outside.

Students including Spandana, Sadhana, Chaithra, Druthi, Satvika and Lakshya participated in the activity. Neharika, a Class 7 student from St. Bartholomew School, attended as a guest bird observer.

Environmental expert Maxim Rodrigues Kollangana said that although many people believe sparrow numbers have reduced, studies in the country do not show a severe decline. He added that changes in habitat may have affected their presence in some areas.
