Over half a million British motorists may be driving illegally after breaking crucial DVLA rules, according to experts. DVLA data secured by Co-op Insurance found that over 500,000 individuals could be getting behind the wheel without a valid driving licence in place.
The shocking new data found that almost 300,000 driving licence photocards that expired between July and December 2025 have yet to be renewed. In addition, more than 210,000 entitlements to drive that lapsed during this period are still pending.
Driving licences are a legal requirement, with road users needing to renew their photocard every 10 years or once every 36 months once they hit the age of 70.
Paul Evans, Head of Motor at Co-op Insurance, urged road users to check their driving licence as often as they can to ensure they are not caught out.
Paul said: "Driving is a crucial part of everyday life for so many people, whether that's for work or leisure. Unfortunately, our findings show that many people may be unaware that they're no longer legally entitled to drive or are at risk of being unable to in the near future, due to their driving licence being invalid.
"We are encouraging motorists to check their driving licences to ensure that they're in date, as they will face significant penalties if their licence is found to be invalid. We would also remind people that if your licence has expired, it could invalidate your insurance and lead to any claims you make being declined."
The situation could get much worse, with analysis revealing that almost 2.7 million driving licence photo cards are set to expire in 2026. Driving without a valid licence could massively backfire, with road users at risk of being hit with a £1,000 fine and between three and six penalty points.
Driving with an invalid licence is also likely to invalidate a motorist's car insurance policy, which would leave road users fully liable for any damage or injury in the event of an accident.
Motorists can renew their driving licence online at GOV.UK in just a matter of minutes. Renewing a photocard costs £14, with drivers expected to receive their new photocard licence within five days. Road users can also renew their licence at Post Office branches, but these applications take longer and cost a bit more.
