Rivoi News, March 21, 2026 – difference between the superstars of war Words to defense technology or space science – missile, ballistic missilerocket and Intercept – When they appear in front of us, at first glance they appear identical. But their roles are completely different from each other.
Whereas a missile finds its target and destroys it, a rocket has the power to carry heavy payloads to space. On the other hand, ballistic missiles cover long distances and destroy enemies in a matter of minutes, while interceptors, like protectors, foil enemy attacks in the sky.
What is a missile?
The missile is a guided weapon system propelled by a rocket. in that radarInfrared or GPS based navigation system. It can change its course even during flight and can destroy enemy positions with utmost precision. The most important thing is that the missile is capable of hitting targets without radar and can be launched from land, air or sea.
What is ballistic missile?
Ballistic missile is also a type of missile. After launching, it rises to a height and follows the prescribed path, after which it reaches the target with the help of gravity. Its speed is very fast. Ballistic missiles travel through space or the upper layer of the atmosphere and are capable of carrying high explosive or nuclear payloads over long distances. Due to its very fast speed and height it is difficult to stop it.
What is a rocket?
While missiles are to defense sector, rockets are to space science. That is a very powerful vehicle. It is used to carry satellites, astronauts or missiles into space. The rocket carries with itself fuel and oxidizer, due to which it can work even in airless space and can generate the necessary energy.
What is an interceptor?
Interceptor is a technology whose job is to destroy enemy missiles in the air. It is a part of the anti-ballistic missile (ABM) system. Interceptor neutralizes any threat or enemy process before it reaches its target. This system plays a very important role in preventing any illegal entry or attack in the country’s sky.
What does India have and how is it prepared?
1. S-400 Triumph: India’s state-of-the-art air defense armor
The S-400 is the world’s most powerful long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by Russia. India has 5 such systems.
Capability: It can track 80 targets simultaneously and destroy enemy aircraft, drones or ballistic missiles in the air within a range of 400 km.
Importance: This system has been deployed to prevent any illegal air infiltration along the China and Pakistan border. It can hit targets up to 30 km altitude.
2. Agni missile series
Agni is India’s most powerful ballistic missile, which is capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
Agni-1 to Agni-4: These are medium range missiles which can strike from 700 to 4000 km.
Agni-5: This is India’s first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Its range is more than 5000 km, which can reach the whole of Asia and some parts of Europe. With the help of rocket technology, they reach very high altitude and attack the enemy.
Agni-P (Prime): This is a new generation advanced missile which can be launched from anywhere by train or truck.
3. Prithvi missile
Prithvi is India’s first indigenously built short-range ballistic missile.
Use: It is used for short range (150-350 km) targets. This missile can get the required energy from both liquid and solid fuel.
Naval variant (Dhanush): Prithvi’s naval version is known as ‘Dhanush’, which can be launched from a war ship.
4. Other important systems
Akash: This is a short-range surface-to-air missile which provides protection against planes and helicopters.
BrahMos: This is the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile, which accurately hits the target while avoiding radar.
