To say that the Crimson Desertdeveloped by Pearl Abyss, would be a flawless masterpiece right from its release date would be far from the truth. As seen with big titles that aim to set new industry standards, developers are facing significant hurdles that are pushing them away from achieving near-perfect reviews. Positioned as a hybrid of single-player narrative-driven role-playing and large-scale sandbox, the game was set to build on the foundations of Black Desert Online.

The game, from its earliest reveal trailers, had been a flagship project that aimed to be a class apart, emphasizing its proprietary BlackSpace Engine, which fed into the familiar industry cycle of inflating expectations through its great graphics and gameplay trailers. The expectations already set a burden on the game before it even entered the market, making flawless launches increasingly difficult.

Crimson Desert: Technical Problems and Lack of Support

The most immediate criticism was centered on technical performance. Reports indicate that the game suffers from framerate instability and inconsistent optimization across all platforms. Alongside some sporadic crashes, these issues were practically seen when players moved around in a densely populated environment, where the game’s most ambitious simulation system was supposed to work its magic.

PC gamers have also noted that they have been suffering through compatibility issues with Intel Arc Graphics cards. The lack of support for Intel graphics cards and the lack of information about them have caused significant inconvenience for many players.

Other Compatibility Issues Faced by Fans

Aside from the hardware compatibility issues, players have also complained about inconsistencies in the gameplay system, describing uneven transitions in mechanics during combat. On similar lines, the game’s open world, although expansive, has had pacing issues, especially during the early hours. This has led players to feel that stretches of content can sometimes feel overly dense or not engaging enough.

Players have also complained that the game is not launching properly and are instead met with a black screen instead of the game menu. There have been many reasons given for why it is happening, with some suggesting launching the game, turning off the internet, and waiting until the game opens.

Fixes and A Rocky Start

To address the Crimson Desert launch fixes, Pearl Abyss has released major updates. Some of these updates, however, seem quite a chore to download, while the smaller update packs for the PS5 and PC are around 20 GB; the Xbox is not so lucky. Some users reported encountering a massive 120 GB download that, in one way, ruined their initial experience. These updates, however, seem to address many of the problems that have surfaced since the game’s launch.

A Broader Industry Pattern

Crimson Desert is not an isolated case of great expectations being set back by problematic launch periods. Cyberpunk 2077, in comparison, had an even worse time with the number of bugs and problems it had; however, with the many updates it has received, it has turned into a decent title. Similarly, Crimson Desert can set out to do the same, even if its launch left a lot to be desired.

Amidst many criticisms, however, Crimson Desert has, in one way, lived up to its promises, providing a world and gameplay that were akin to those seen in the many clips. Hopefully, the game will be able to get back on track and provide the gameplay experience that wins back the audience it had previously. However, like with Cyberpunk 2077, which had great potential but was greatly diminished in its glory due to its early launch problems, it looks like this will remain as a big mark on the legacy of the game.
