Weston-super-Mare's crumbling Birnbeck Pier has received a major lifeline after the UK Government awarded £19 million from its Growth Mission Fund to North Somerset Council's ambitious restoration project. The funding, announced on Thursday, will enable vital work on the Grade II*-listed structure, transforming the derelict site into a vibrant heritage and visitor attraction of national importance.
Councillor Mike Bell, Leader of North Somerset Council, described the sum as "game-changing". Mr Bell said: "I can't underestimate what today's announcement means. Not only is it great news for our project to restore Birnbeck Pier but this will boost growth and create a more prosperous future for local people." The additional money will fund repairs and renovations to buildings on the landside and the island, with hopes of also restoring the north jetty. This will bring the entire pier site back to life after decades of decline. Closed to the public since 1994 due to safety concerns, the pier has long symbolised the seaside town's decay.
Mr Bell thanked local MP Dan Aldridge for his relentless advocacy. Mr Bell said: "I worked closely with Mr Aldridge to promote this bid and he has always supported our vision for Birnbeck Pier. I'm sure his passion for our community made every difference in convincing ministers to support our project."
The council's team was also praised for their role in securing the bid, with rapid delivery now the priority. Contractor Smith & Brenson, already on site, will begin additional landside work first. Repairs to the island buildings and north jetty will follow once access along the pier is secured.
Councillor Mark Canniford, Cabinet Member responsible for the Birnbeck project, highlighted ongoing progress. Mr Canniford said: "Work is continuing at pace to restore the pier itself, with lots of activity on site led by our contractor Mackley.
"Once this is completed, I look forward to the delivery of the next exciting phase of work. Thank you again to residents and businesses for their support and cooperation whilst this work is undertaken."
The £19 million pushes total external funding for the pier structure restoration beyond £44 million. Contributions have come from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, RNLI, UK government, National Heritage Memorial Fund, and Historic England.
The money is ring-fenced strictly for this project and cannot be redirected to other council services such as adult social care, children's services, or road maintenance.
Birnbeck Pier, unique as the only pier in the UK linking the mainland to an island, has been the focus of years of fundraising and planning. Previous grants, including from the former Levelling Up Fund and Heritage Lottery, have enabled initial structural repairs now under way.
With this latest injection, the project edges closer to full completion, promising economic benefits through tourism and regeneration for Weston-super-Mare. More details on the Birnbeck Pier project are available at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/BirnbeckPierProject.
