New Delhi: Former New Zealand opener Brendon McCullum is set to continue as England head coach in all formats, even after their disappointing results in the big tournaments. After England were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal, there were some doubts over McCullum’s future as England’s head coach.

According to The Telegraph report, Brendon McCullum has secured his job after resolving the rift with Test skipper Ben Stokes. The duo had several differences in Australia and were critical of each other during the ECB’s Ashes review. Australia thrashed England 4-1 in the five-match Test series.

Stokes also went public on the Ashes tour and said the opponents have answers to their style of play and became very predictable, while McCullum believed that the England skipper failed to stick to their philosophy and his mixed messaging confused players.

“I think that we are now playing against teams who have answers to the style of cricket that we have been playing over quite a long period of time now,” Stokes said.

Final talks ended as ECB complete Ashes review

The final talks between McCullum and Stokes ended this week as the ECB completed its review. According to the report, the former Kiwi opener has accepted multiple changes with Ed Barney (ECB Performance Director) taking a bigger role in the set-up. He will implement a new coaching staff and have a greater emphasis on strength and conditioning.

Stokes has been satisfied by the changes promised, as the ECB believes that he and McCullum can take the team forward. England will also play warm-up matches against the local teams before their Test tours of South Africa and Bangladesh. Ben Stokes and Co. will also play a warm-up game before a one-off day-night match at the MCG to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Test cricket. McCullum’s contract runs until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa in October.
