Imphal, March 21: The 3rd edition of the North East India Film Festival (NEIFF) 2026 commenced at TanthaPolis Cinema in Imphal on Saturday, showcasing a carefully curated selection of films from the Northeast and emphasizing the region's emerging cinematic narrative.
During the festival's inauguration, Professor Paonam Gunindro, Vice Chancellor of the Manipur University of Culture, highlighted cinema's role as a cultural repository and a vibrant medium that mirrors changing social dynamics.
He remarked, “Cinema serves as a significant educational tool and a means of social representation,” noting that events like NEIFF allow the diverse identities of the Northeast to connect with audiences beyond national borders while safeguarding their stories.
Gunindro expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), hoping for the festival's growth in both scale and outreach in future editions.
Tongbram Ramesh Singh, Additional Director of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), mentioned that the initiative aims to foster filmmakers and enhance the regional film landscape.
He acknowledged that despite time limitations, the third edition was made feasible with the Ministry's approval.
Singh pointed out the increasing recognition of Northeast cinema, citing the Manipuri film Boong, which achieved a BAFTA Award, marking a historic moment for India's film industry.
“The Northeast is rich in storytelling potential, cultural heritage, and skilled filmmakers. Events like NEIFF are crucial for bringing these narratives to light,” he urged, encouraging public participation, with all screenings being free of charge.
The inaugural event was attended by Y. Nilachandra Singh, Chairman of the organizing committee, along with filmmakers, producers, and artists from the region.
Over the two-day festival, nine films will be showcased, including Collage, Kangbo Aloti, Ha Lyngkha Bneng, Noi Kotha, Romantic Affairs, Toy Gun, The Check Post, Phouoibee, and Laininghal Naoria Phullo, reflecting the rich storytelling diversity of the Northeast.
Jointly organized by THOUNA, DIPR, and the All Manipur Film Producers Association, the festival is supported by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and NFDC.
The event aims to foster an inclusive film culture while promoting critical engagement with cinema as an artistic medium.
