Hailstorm damages crops over 56,000 hectares in Karnataka

Bengaluru/Hubballi: Heavy hailstorms across Karnataka have damaged crops spread over more than 56,000 hectares, according to preliminary estimates, causing losses to farmers.

Officials said horticulture crops in Bidar district were the most affected, with over 51,000 hectares of land damaged. Crops such as mango, watermelon, papaya, onion and other vegetables were impacted.

In Yadgiri district, paddy and jowar crops suffered damage due to the hailstorm.

In Bagalkot district, including Badami and Teradal taluks, crops such as papaya, banana, pomegranate and vegetables were affected. About 2,400 hectares of horticulture crops were damaged in the district.

Vijayapura district reported damage to crops like mango, grapes, guava and sapota, while in Gadag district, more than 15 hectares of mango crop were affected.

In Shivamogga taluk, around 10 hectares of arecanut, 5 hectares of banana and 5 hectares of vegetable crops were damaged.

In Ballari and Vijayanagara districts, strong winds along with hailstorms damaged 602 hectares of paddy and 5 hectares of banana crops that were ready for harvest.

Belagavi district reported damage to horticulture crops spread across 150.39 hectares, with an estimated loss of ₹31.78 lakh.

In Dharwad district, especially in Kalghatgi, crops over about 450 acres, including mango, banana and vegetables, were affected.

Chitradurga district also reported damage to banana, papaya, arecanut and vegetable crops.

In Chikkaballapur district, horticulture crops including grapes, mango, flowers, fruits and vegetables suffered losses estimated at around ₹2.5 crore.
