India has blocked the release of “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” an Oscar-nominated film based on the killing of a Palestinian child in Gaza. The decision has raised concerns about censorship and freedom of expression.

The film is directed by Kaouther Ben Hania. It tells the story of five-year-old Hind Rajab. She was killed during the Gaza conflict while her family was trying to flee.

The movie had gained international attention. It was nominated at the Academy Awards. It also won a major prize at the Venice Film Festival. Audiences around the world responded emotionally to its story.

However, Indian authorities did not approve its release. The Central Board of Film Certification reviewed the film. Officials reportedly believed the film could harm India’s relations with Israel.

The distributor said no formal rejection notice was issued. Still, it became clear that the film would not be cleared for cinemas.

Interestingly, the film had already been screened in Kolkata during a festival last year. It has also been released in several countries, including Israel.

Opposition leader Shashi Tharoor criticised the move. He called it “disgraceful.” He said films should not be blocked due to diplomatic concerns. He added that freedom of expression must be protected in a democracy.

The decision has sparked debate across India. Many are questioning censorship rules. Others are discussing the balance between art and foreign policy.
