Bijni, March 22: As the party gears up for crucial Assembly elections, Senior BJP leader and Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah is taking steps to address internal dissent within the Bijni constituency.
On Sunday, Mallabaruah met with Bijni MLA Ajoy Kumar Ray, who has been denied a ticket to contest, amidst rumors that Ray might run as an Independent candidate.
The BJP has nominated Arup Kumar Dey for the Bijni seat.
During a press conference, Mallabaruah recognized that it is common for supporters to feel discontent when incumbent legislators are not renominated.
“Dissatisfaction is expected when a popular MLA does not receive a ticket. However, our goal is to strengthen the party,” he stated.
Mallabaruah also mentioned a previous visit to Silchar, where three MLAs faced similar situations regarding ticket denials.
“We are committed to the party and have listened to concerns while working towards solutions,” he added.
He praised Ray as a dedicated party member, saying, “Ajoy has been a loyal BJP worker since his youth.”
Addressing rumors of a rift with the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) over the Bijni seat, Mallabaruah noted that differences are typical in alliance politics.
“Every party aims to nominate its own candidate. While there may be some initial friction, it will be resolved,” he remarked.
“Our duty is to keep all workers content. With a large base, many seek nominations, and some will inevitably be disappointed. However, the leadership will ensure inclusivity,” he continued.
Ray, on his part, did not completely dismiss the idea of running as an Independent.
He mentioned that he has been in contact with State BJP president Dilip Saikia, the Chief Minister, and other leaders, and will consult with his supporters before making a final decision.
“I was planning to submit my nomination on Monday after previously contesting independently and losing by a narrow margin. We will reconvene with supporters to ensure our actions align with the party’s interests,” Ray stated.
He acknowledged the emotional ties involved due to his close relationship with the Chief Minister but emphasized the importance of making the “right decision.”
Ray refrained from providing a clear answer regarding his potential independent candidacy.
