Kamakhya Devi Temple
The temple of Maa Kamakhya Devi situated on the Nilanchal hills is an important religious place in Guwahati, the capital of Assam. This place is considered a major center of spirituality and Tantra Vidya and is known as one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of the Goddess. Construction of the temple in the 16th century
This temple was built in the 16th century. There is no idol of the Mother here, rather there is a vagina-shaped boulder in the middle of a natural water stream in the sanctum sanctorum, which is worshiped considering it to be the form of the Mother. The carvings of the temple and the stone carvings make it one of the most beautiful temples in India.
One of the 51 Shaktipeeths
According to mythology, when Lord Vishnu cut the body of Mata Sati with his Sudarshan Chakra, her body parts fell at 51 places. It is said that the vagina part of Mother Sati had fallen on Neelanchal mountain, due to which this place became a symbol of female power and creation.
Center for Tantra Sadhana
Kamakhya Shakti Peeth is considered the stronghold of Tantra Vidya. Aghori, Sadhu and Tantrik come here for their achievements. It is believed that the worship done here removes the obstacles of enemies and negative powers.
Darshan of ten Mahavidyas
Along with the temple of Maa Kamakhya, there are also temples of ten Mahavidyas here. These include Tripura Sundari, Kali, Tara, Bhuvaneshwari, Baglamukhi, Chhinnamasta, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Matangi and Kamala. Apart from this, five temples of Mahadev are also located here.
How to reach Kamakhya Devi Temple?
– air shaft: The nearest airport is Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, about 20 kilometers from the temple. After landing here, the temple can be reached by taxi or bus.
– railroad track: Kamakhya Junction is the nearest railway station, but Guwahati Railway Station provides better connections. From there, auto, e-rickshaw and bus services are available to reach the temple.
– Roadways: Guwahati city is well connected by road. You can directly reach the temple through private vehicles or government buses.
Important tips for darshan
– The doors of the temple remain open from 8 am to sunset. In the afternoon the doors are closed for the Mother to rest.
– During special festivals, darshan may take 5-10 hours, so VIP pass or early arrival is advised.
– Go to the temple wearing traditional and decent clothes.
