A UK seaside city boasts the title of being home to Britain's biggest pier and longest high street. The resort is known for its traditional seaside experience, offering amusment parks, sandy beaches, affordability and family-friendly attractions.

Southend-on-Sea, in Essex, has the longest pier in the UK. Southend Pier, which was built in 1830, stretches a whopping 1.33 miles (2.16km) into the Thames Estuary. Meanwhile, Ordnance Survey has officially recognised London Road as the longest high street in the UK. Both landmarks contribute to making Southend-on-Sea a popular tourist destination throughout the year.

As well as being the longest in the UK, Southend Pier was named Pier of the Year in 2023. It is considered an essential attraction to visit while in the city due to its ailway, cafes and stunning waterside views.

London Road, which spans 2,983 metres, is the main attraction away from the seafront. It features Victoria Shopping Centre, as well as cafes, shops and historical town spots.

The Royals Shopping Centre is also connected to London Road. The centre homes eateries and cafes, and is popular among tourists.

London Road also benefits from being close to the Priory Park and Museum. The museum features local art and a host of well-known exhibitions.

Other attractions in Southend-on-Sea include Adventure Island, which boasts 40 rides on the seafront, and Sea-Life Adventure. The aquarium and zoo is ideally located near the pier and is popular among families.

Southend-on-Sea also has award-winning Blue Flag beaches. They are often very busy during the summer months as families flock to the resort for a day at the seaside.

Located nearby the city is Old Leigh. The charming fishing village offers the perfect escape during the busier days, with an array of pubs and seafood restaurants.

According to RightMove, the average house price in Southend-on-Sea is £352,004 over the last year. Flats sold for an average of £211,677, semi-detached homes for £395,477, and terraced properties for £327,185.

Southend-on-Sea has a number of positive reviews on TripAdvisor. Many visitors note the beautiful beach as well as the range of shops and eateries.

Indi said: "Had a Great time here yesterday. Went on the Train on the Pier, and the Pier Museum. Then had some Fish and Chips there. There are lots of shops in the High Street, just a few minutes walk from the Beach, and they have McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Wendys, Tesco Express, Marks and Spencers etc.

"Enjoyed my time relaxing on the City Beach, and there is a Mini Golf and Sealife centre there. So there was plenty to do and plenty to see, and really enjoyed it and would go again."

Kate-Southend added: "Good beach, plenty of bins. Dogs are not allowed during the summer months. Lots of space. The seafront has lots to offer."
