Ian Wright in 'argument' with Carabao Cup final referees as Sky Sports mic picks up shouts

Ian Wright and the Carabao Cup final refereeing team had a lighthearted argument before kick-off about being in each other's way. Sky Sports microphones captured shouts between the two parties, with host Mark Chapman having to explain what was happening while they were off-screen.

The officiating team for the final consists of Peter Bankes as referee, Neil Davies and Steve Meredith as assistants, and Tom Bramall as the fourth official, with Marc Perry as the reserve assistant referee.

The team were warming up on the pitch beforehand, but Sky Sports' coverage was also taking place on the Wembley turf. Wright and Chapman had moved into the middle of the pitch for an interview as they continued their build-up to the showpiece match while Jamie Redknapp and Micah Richards stepped away. That is where some of the issues arose.

As the camera started to zoom back in towards the host and pundit, Wright could be heard shouting to the officials: "What are you talking about?! We're not in your way, we're not in your way."

The Arsenal icon could be heard laughing as he exchanged words with the refereeing team before Chapman explained what was happening to the viewers. Giggling, he said: "We've moved on to the middle of the pitch where Ian's just having an argument with the refereeing team about whether we're in the middle of their warm-up or not."

The good-natured 'argument' did not disrupt their coverage too much, though, with Chapman going on to interview Wright as the referees jogged off to begin their warm-up.

Wright was asked whether the final was the be-all and end-all for Arsenal to win as they eye a historic quadruple. He said: "It's very natural to start to dream, but this team knows how important it is to take that last step.

"No one in that dressing room will be getting carried away. I listen to them all speak; everyone is speaking about the next game.

"It would be massive for the players, the fans, for momentum and the dressing room to win today. This doesn't affect the project if Arsenal lose today. The main thing is winning the Premier League, but this would be the icing on the cake."

Wright also exuded confidence before kick-off at Wembley, as a former Arsenal player and vocal fan of the club he represented throughout the 1990s. The pundit said: "I'm feeling good about today.

"City's team looks very strong, but the team [Arsenal] have got is testament to the depth of the squad. I can look at it and still be quite happy with it going out and playing in a one-off final."

Eberechi Eze is the notable absentee for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta explained before kick-off: "We tried everything, but unfortunately him, Martin [Odegaard], Jurrien [Timber] and Mikel [Merino] are out.

"Timber and Merino couldn't make it. They will still be out for a couple of weeks, and we will see what happens after the international break."
