Japan’s New Chitose Airport has overtaken Bahrain International Airport to claim the title of the world’s cleanest airport in the category serving up to 30 million passengers, according to London-based aviation consultancy Skytrax.

Bahrain, which claimed the top spot last year, was pushed to the third place after New Chitose and Chubu Centrair International Airport, also of Japan, based on a survey that assessed passengers’ experiences across multiple factors, including waiting times, queuing systems, priority lanes, e-gate efficiency, and the courtesy and effectiveness of immigration staff.

Japan’s Osaka Itami ranked fourth, followed by Australia’s Brisbane.

The rest of the top 10 were Vietnam’s Cam Ranh, Finland’s Helsinki-Vantaa, Muscat, Australia’s Adelaide and the U.S.’s Houston Hobby.

As Japan’s third-busiest airport, New Chitose is known for its exceptional hygiene and high-quality maintenance.

Serving as the primary gateway to Hokkaido, the airport offers a wide range of amenities, including popular local retail outlets, a confectionery factory, and diverse facilities that enhance comfort and convenience for travelers.

The 2026 World’s Cleanest Airports list is divided into two categories: one for all airports and another for airports with up to 30 million passengers annually.

Tokyo Haneda in Japan remains the cleanest of all airports.
