Train Ticket Cancellation New Rules: Millions of people travel on Indian Railways every day. With the convenience of passengers in mind, the Railways periodically introduce various changes. The Railways have now revised the rules regarding ticket cancellations. According to the new regulations, distinct refund rates and penalties have been established for ticket cancellations. As the scheduled departure time of the train approaches, these rules will become progressively stricter. Additionally, changes have been introduced regarding the cancellation of PRS counter tickets, and the process for obtaining e-ticket refunds has also been simplified. The Railways will implement these new rules between April 1 and April 15, 2026.

New Rules for PRS Counter Tickets
According to the Railways' new regulations, tickets previously had to be cancelled at the specific station where they were originally purchased; however, they can now be cancelled at any station. Prior to this, Indian Railways had already implemented several changes to its ticket booking system. A new rule was introduced on October 1, 2025, making Aadhaar authentication mandatory during the first 15 minutes of the booking window for tickets booked under the General Quota via the IRCTC website or mobile app. The objective behind this measure was to ensure that genuine passengers secure tickets and to minimize the misuse of the system. Furthermore, effective July 1, 2025, Aadhaar verification was made mandatory for Tatkal ticket bookings as well. Now, in accordance with the new rules for PRS counter ticket cancellations, tickets can be cancelled at any station.

E-Ticket Refunds Also Simplified
Previously, passengers were required to fill out a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt); however, the requirement for a TDR has now been eliminated. Indian Railways has streamlined the e-ticket refund process, thereby doing away with the necessity of filing a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) in certain specific situations. For online cancellations, the refund will now be credited automatically to your bank account.

New Rules for Ticket Cancellation
The Ministry of Railways has also introduced changes to the rules governing the cancellation and refund of confirmed tickets. Under this new framework, going forward, if a ticket is not cancelled within the stipulated timeframe, no refund will be issued. According to the new rules, refunds will now be processed based on the timing of the cancellation. If a ticket is cancelled more than 72 hours prior to the train's departure, only a minimum cancellation fee will be deducted. For cancellations made between 72 and 24 hours before departure, 25% of the fare will be deducted. If cancelled between 24 and 8 hours prior to departure, 50% of the fare will be deducted; however, if a ticket is cancelled less than 8 hours before the train's departure, no refund will be granted.
