LPG Crisis: The situation regarding LPG gas in the country is gradually evolving. The impact of the ongoing tensions in the Gulf nations is now becoming visible on India's gas supply as well. Amidst this, claims have recently surfaced on social media and in certain news reports suggesting that the government intends to reduce the standard domestic LPG cylinder size from 14.2 kg to 10 kg. You, too, may have heard about this news. Consequently, anxiety had risen among the general public. However, the government has now categorically clarified its stance on the matter, dismissing all such reports as mere rumors.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has termed these claims as completely false and misleading. The Ministry stated that there are absolutely no plans to reduce the size of domestic LPG cylinders from 14.2 kg to 10 kg.
Government's Clear Response to Rumors
In an exclusive interaction with the media, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry, explicitly stated that such reports are "entirely speculative." She further appealed to the public to disregard these rumors. Sujata Sharma emphasized that the government's current focus remains on maintaining the stability of the gas supply and curbing illegal trading activities, rather than on making any changes to the weight of the cylinders.
What is the Status of LPG Supply?
According to the government, the LPG supply across the country remains normal. There are no instances of gas shortages anywhere. The trend of panic-induced over-booking by consumers has now subsided. Gas deliveries are also proceeding as usual. Consequently, general consumers have no reason to panic.
Increase in PNG Connections
Sujata Sharma also provided information indicating that approximately 3.5 lakh new domestic and commercial PNG (Piped Natural Gas) connections have been activated over the past three weeks. This initiative has been undertaken to bolster the gas supply infrastructure and provide consumers with a wider range of options.
New Decision Regarding Commercial LPG
The government has also taken a significant decision concerning commercial LPG. Henceforth, 50% of the commercial LPG supply will be allocated to the various States and Union Territories. It will be utilized in restaurants, *dhabas*, hotels, industrial canteens, dairy units, and community kitchens. This initiative also covers 5-kilogram small cylinders (FTL) for migrant workers. So far, approximately 20 states and Union Territories have implemented this system, and about 15,800 tons of commercial LPG have already been consumed.
Important Advisory for the Public
Sujata Sharma has clearly advised the public not to place their trust in any rumors. People should rely solely on official information; furthermore, there is no need to panic regarding the availability of gas.
