Woman Marries River England: In today’s time, where the definition of relationships is constantly changing, a story has come to light which has surprised everyone and forced them to think. This is the story of 29 year old Meg Avon, who married a river and is now going to celebrate the third anniversary of her unique marriage.
Unique decision taken to save environment
Meg Avon, a researcher, writer and environmental activist, took this step not on a whim but with a specific purpose. They had a symbolic marriage on 17 June 2023 by the Avon River that flows in south-west England.
The purpose of this wedding was to draw people’s attention towards water pollution and spread awareness to save the river. Meg believes that if humans consider nature as a part of their life, only then will they come forward to protect it.
Deep emotional connection with the river
Meg says that their relationship is not just a symbol, but she actually feels a deep connection to this river. She goes to swim in the river every week, no matter what the weather. Even in winter, when the water can be cold and dangerous, Megs still go to the river. For them it is not just an activity but a special experience of connecting with nature.
Increasing engagement in new ways
Meg has adopted several new methods to further strengthen her relationship with River. She goes to different places on the banks of the river and swims, organizes programs there and meets people to the environment. Through these activities, they not only live their relationship but also inspire people to come closer to nature.
Continuous campaign against water pollution
Meg is also involved with an environmental group ‘Connham Bathers’. The group is working to achieve better water quality and ‘bathable’ status for the River Avon. Although the river has not yet received this status because its water quality is poor, Meg and his team are continuously making efforts for it.
Increasing awareness among people
Recently, the problem of sewage (dirty water) was highlighted in the UK through a documentary, after which people’s attention became more towards this issue. Meg says that now people have started understanding this problem and taking local issues seriously. According to him, this change is happening slowly but in the right direction.
Hope and beauty are seen in the river
Meg believes that river water does not get dirty every day. At times the water also appears clean and beautiful, which gives them hope that if right efforts are made the river can be made clean again. He says that getting into the water and spending time with nature is very important for today’s youth, especially in the era when technology has distanced people from nature.
Effort to give river the status of ‘person’
Meg and her group are now trying to get the River Avon the status of a ‘legal person’. If this happens, it will become easier to protect river rights and environmental protection will be further strengthened. Along with this, it can also help in giving official recognition to their symbolic marriage.
