The Centre has stepped up efforts to expand gas networks across the country and reduce dependence on a single fuel source, introducing a policy that may halt LPG supply to households that do not switch to piped natural gas (PNG) in areas where such infrastructure is already available.
The move comes amid disruptions in global oil supplies due to the ongoing Middle East crisis, prompting authorities to promote PNG as a more reliable alternative for both domestic and commercial users.
The directive has been issued under the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution (Through Laying, Building, Operation and Expansion of Pipelines and Other Facilities) Order, 2026, notified by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The gas company will verify the details and schedule installation.
Consumers can also file complaints through the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas grievance portal or the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS).

Can households keep both LPG and PNG?
Yes, households can maintain both LPG and PNG connections. While PNG is typically used for daily cooking, LPG cylinders are often retained as a backup during emergencies.PNG vs LPG: which is cheaper?
PNG is generally more cost-effective than LPG, as consumers are billed based on actual usage. In contrast, LPG requires periodic cylinder purchases, which can lead to higher cumulative costs over time. What to do if you cannot book an LPG cylinder
Consumers facing issues with LPG booking can:- Use mobile apps, websites, SMS or IVRS services
- Ensure the registered mobile number is active
