
Amidst the ongoing tension in the Middle East, the government has adopted alert mode regarding LPG supply. It was told in the inter-ministry briefing that the availability and demand of gas in the country is being continuously monitored. Ministry officials are reviewing the situation by holding daily meetings with oil and gas companies.
Two big LPG ships will reach West Coast
According to the Shipping Ministry, two big LPG ships will reach the West Coast of India in the next two days. There is about 92 thousand tonnes of LPG loaded in these ships, which is expected to provide some relief to the supply. However, at present there is no information about the arrival of any new LPG cargo from Iran.
Priority being given to domestic consumers
Officials made it clear that the first priority of the government is domestic LPG consumers. Recently, bookings of about 58 lakh gas cylinders have been registered, efforts are on to complete them. It was also clarified that at present there has been no increase in the price of domestic gas.
Appeal to shift to PNG
The government has also indicated that consumers who have the option of PNG (Piped Natural Gas) will be encouraged to shift from LPG to PNG. It is estimated that about 60 lakh consumers are eligible for this change. Appeals will be sent to all such consumers through registered post.
Over-dependence on imports poses a challenge
India's LPG supply is largely dependent on imports, whereas the situation is better in the case of PNG. In such a situation, keeping the supply balanced amid the current global situation remains a challenge for the government.
