Long before becoming one of the world's greatest batters, Virat Kohli displayed the fiery mindset and resilience that would define his career.
A former Delhi teammate has now recalled an incident from Kohli's early days where the youngster responded to adversity with remarkable determination.
Former Delhi cricketer Jagrit Anand shared the story from the Under-17 days, revealing how a coach allegedly attempted to undermine Kohli despite his outstanding performances.
Coach's Alleged Bias Failed To Stop Young Virat Kohli
According to Anand, Kohli had already established himself as a standout performer in Delhi's junior cricket circuit, scoring heavily in the Vijay Merchant Trophy.
"When we were playing Under-17, Virat had scored a double century and a couple of centuries in the previous season. He was already a known name," Anand said while recounting the episode.
However, despite his success, one coach reportedly did not favour Kohli and tried to hold him back.
"There was a particular coach who was not too much in favour of Virat, so he was trying to pull him down in his own ways in spite of having that kind of record," Anand added.
Instead of being discouraged, Kohli responded with fierce intent ahead of a key match against Punjab.
Before the game, Anand recalled a conversation where Kohli made his mindset clear.
"He said, 'I will beat the living hell out of these people,' in his proper Delhi language," Anand revealed.
Kohli backed up his words in style, smashing a double century in that match. During the same season, he scored multiple centuries and led Delhi to the Vijay Merchant Trophy title, cementing his reputation as a rising star.
Early Signs Of Virat Kohli Mental Toughness
The remarkable season also included massive knocks such as 227 against Punjab and another double hundred in the semi-finals. These performances paved the way for Kohli's rapid rise through domestic cricket.
Within a few years, Kohli would lead India to Under-19 World Cup glory in 2008 - marking the beginning of a career defined by resilience, hunger and an unrelenting drive to succeed.
