Author Tom Bowers released his latest book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, today. The work focuses on the split and ongoing feud between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Royal Family.
Prince Harry, 41, and Meghan Markle, 44, stepped down from royal duties in early 2020, with the couple soon moving to the US with their young son. Behind their clearfully polished image in the public eye, the Revenge author delves into the what appears to be "downward spiral of decline" of Meghan and Harry.
Here, The Express looks at seven of the biggest bombshells uncovered in the latest royal book.
During the couple's 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan shared how she was not told by officials what she should expect upon marrying into the Royal Family. In his memoir, which was released in 2023, Harry wrote how his wife "wasn't given one minute of training". However, in his latest book, Mr Bowers claimed Queen Elizabeth II instructed that Meghan was given appropriate training for her role as a senior royal. One official told the author that Meghan refused to grasp that "the Royal Family is the nation's family and a national obsession" and that "the royals may appear to be ordinary people but to maintain the monarchy, they relied on the public's willingness to treat them like God". Noting that Meghan allegedly ignored all advice, the source added that she "thought she should be treated as God".
Before the move to the US six years ago, Prince William and Princess Catherine's tense relationship with Harry and Meghan was seemingly beginning to show. Prior to the couple's wedding in 2018, William reportedly warned Harry that the relationship was going too fast. William and Catherine were said to be concerned that Meghan "lamented Harry's unlikely chance of one day being king, just as she regretted the possibility that she would never be queen". Shortly after the Sussexes returned from their honeymoon in 2018, relations purportedly broke down during a tense meeting which ended in Meghan allegedly snapping at William: "If you don't mind, get your finger out of my face."
The books details how the Royal Family felt Meghan had become a "divisive agent" when it came to Harry. Those around the Duke of Sussex also feared that he had become estranged from his family after he apparently changed his phone number without telling them. Speaking of Queen Camilla, the author wrote: Bower writes: "Increasingly, his character mirrored Meghan's. Emotionally, he veered towards extremes. Simple dislikes became passionate hatred. ‘Meghan's brainwashed Harry,' Camilla told a friend".
Three years after stepping down as a senior royal, Harry released Spare. Penguin Random House reportedly found the process of publishing Prince Harry's 2023 memoir exhausting. A senior rewriter claimed: "Harry was considered to be a difficult author." As well as the report that Harry rejected a dozen cover pictures for the book, Ben Greenberg, the publisher's editor-in-chief, is said to have complained that he was "argumentative" and "missing deadlines".
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry visited Nigeria in May 2024, four years after stepping down as working royals. The visit, much like a few other visits they taken since, was deemed a "faux-royal tour" due to similarities to official royal tours. Tom Bowers has claimed in his new book that the pair believed Nigeria was "the perfect battleground on which to weaponise a portrayal of the Royal Family as racist". The author also wrote that "over a dinner conversation in the military's headquarters, Meghan told her story of two senior royals asking Harry while she was pregnant what colour the unborn child would be".

As shared by Tom Bowers, former head of the Invictus Foundation, Dominic Reid, allegedly voiced concerns that sport and competitors were being overshadowed at the Games and that it had become the "Harry and Meghan show". He wrote: "Meghan needed a global stage for genuine admiration and cheering fans. To her good fortune, Harry agreed that she could star at the Invictus Games, which he was about to open in Canada. Just before flying up to Vancouver in a private jet, she alerted her Instagram followers."
After the King stripped Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor of his titles last year, and had him evicted from Royal Lodge, Harry is said to have began fearing for his own future. Harry is believed to have been surprised by his brother William's response to the King's actions, with Mr Bowers' writing that "the future King William could remove all the Sussexes' titles and effectively banish him from Britain".
