In the Indian Premier League (IPL), batsmen are awarded the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs in a season. The bowler who is at the forefront in taking wickets wins the Purple Cap. This trend has been going on since the beginning of IPL. In the first season of the tournament played in 2008, Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir was the top wicket taker. While playing for Rajasthan Royals, he took 22 wickets and won the Purple Cap. RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha won this award in the next two seasons. Both were in the team of Deccan Chargers.
West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is the first bowler to win the Purple Cap more than once. He took the most wickets in a season in 2013 and 2015. Bravo took 32 wickets in 2013, which is the record for most wickets in a season. Harshal Patel also took 32 wickets in the 2021 season. Harshal is the only bowler to win the Purple Cap while playing for two different teams. He won this award while playing for RCB in 2021 and then for Punjab Kings in 2024. Indian fast Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the first and only bowler to win the Purple Cap twice consecutively. See the list of Purple Cap winners so far.
