Vessel 'Jag Vasant' Reaches Kandla Port with 42,000 Tonnes of LPG, To Boost Domestic Supply

India received a major boost to its energy supply as the LPG carrier Jag Vasant arrived at Kandla Port on Friday, carrying 42,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The shipment comes at a crucial time amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

According to port authorities, the LPG cargo will be unloaded using the mid-sea transfer method, ensuring faster distribution across the country. Kandla Port, one of India’s largest energy import hubs, plays a key role in supplying LPG to various cities nationwide. The arrival of this large shipment is expected to significantly strengthen domestic LPG availability.

What is Mid-Sea Transfer?

To meet rising demand, authorities are using the mid-sea transfer technique, where LPG is transferred directly at sea from the vessel to port systems or secondary carriers. This method not only saves time but also speeds up the unloading and distribution process.

Iran Allows India & Friendly Nations Passage Through Hormuz

The tanker reached India via the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically crucial but conflict-affected route. Disruptions in this region had raised concerns over energy supplies. However, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently allowed ships from India and other friendly nations to pass through the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz remains vital for India, as more than 2.5–2.7 million barrels of crude oil and LPG are transported daily from the Middle East through this route. Its continued accessibility is critical for ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies.

Other Tankers That Reached India Safely

Despite tensions between Iran and the United States, India has managed to maintain steady energy imports. Several vessels have successfully reached Indian ports:
  • MT Shivalik arrived at Mundra Port on March 16
  • MT Nanda Devi delivered LPG at Kandla on March 17
  • Jag Ladki reached Mundra on March 18 with 81,000 tonnes of crude oil
  • Shenlong arrived in Mumbai on March 12 carrying Saudi crude
