Love Story's final scene and poem explained
For those unfamiliar with the story, JFK Jr and his wife Carolyn Bessette's marriage truly did end in tragedy when the aircraft they were travelling aboard crashed off the coast of Massachusetts into the ocean on July 16, 1999. They were en route to a family wedding at Martha's Vineyard, with Carolyn's sister Lauren also aboard. All three perished in the crash.
The final episode of Love Story is effectively divided into two parts, with the opening section focusing on the crash itself. At one moment, Carolyn decides to sit beside John during the flight, and their exchange suggests they envisage a hopeful future for their marriage.
Tragically, it becomes apparent that the aircraft is encountering difficulties, with John unable to see ahead of him. Warning indicators illuminate and he grows noticeably distressed. Carolyn, and even Lauren seated behind them, appear to accept that something terrible is imminent, with Carolyn urging John to breathe. The screen fades to black before the actual impact is shown.
The latter portion of the episode examines the consequences of the crash and the repercussions of their deaths. Carolyn's mother is depicted confronting members of the Kennedy family as they attempt to reach agreement on funeral arrangements.
John's sister Caroline is shown struggling equally, as she evidently begins to relive the bereavements she has endured throughout her life, including her mother's death and father's assassination.
The pair ultimately appear to reach an understanding after sharing their sorrow. In one of the closing scenes, Carolyn and Lauren's mother recites a poem during the funeral service. It is a well-known piece frequently chosen for funerals, entitled Death Is Nothing At All by Henry Scott Holland. The poem is celebrated for its portrayal of death as though the departed has simply stepped into an adjoining room.
It is an uplifting verse that encourages those left behind to continue living as they once did, while cherishing the memory of those they have lost. The opening lines, as delivered in the episode, include: "Death is nothing at all / I have only slipped away to the next room. / I am I and you are you. / Whatever we were to each other, /That, we still are."
As the poem continues to be read aloud, we witness JFK Jr and Carolyn seated together by the water's edge in what appears to be an almost ethereal sequence. It mirrors an earlier moment in the series in which the pair were shown together in a strikingly similar setting. The scene appears to suggest that the two will forever remain united.
