MBBS Student: At this medical college in UP, three students have been pursuing their MBBS studies for over 20 years. However, they keep failing. The college had even stopped releasing its results. The court subsequently intervened in this matter.

MBBS Student: A bizarre case has emerged from the BRD Medical College located in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Three students at this institution have been studying at the same medical college for many years, yet they repeatedly fail their examinations. One student belongs to the 1998 batch, another to the 2009 batch, and the third to the 2010 batch. The university has now ceased releasing the results for these students altogether. Consequently, one of these students decided to approach the court for redress.

Student Approaches the Court

These students, who are pursuing their MBBS at BRD, are currently awaiting their final-year results. However, the college had stopped issuing results for these specific students. The college argued that since these cases predate 2020, the new regulations—which mandate that the course must be completed within a maximum of 10 years—do not apply to them. In response to this, one of the students petitioned the High Court.

Court Orders Release of Results

The court intervened in the matter, and the college subsequently released the results. However, the student failed in two subjects once again. This student will now be granted an opportunity to appear for supplementary examinations. The college is now expected to release the results for the remaining two students as well.

How Long Does One Have to Complete an MBBS Course?

According to the National Medical Commission (NMC), if a student enrolls in an MBBS course in 2020 or thereafter, they must complete the course within nine years from the date of admission. This period comprises 4.5 years of academic study and one year of mandatory internship.

What Do the Pre-2020 Regulations State? The NMC (formerly MCI) stated that students admitted to the MBBS course prior to 2020 were required to complete it within 5.5 years (comprising 4.5 years of academic study and 1 year of internship). However, the regulations also stipulated that in the event of failure or a gap in studies, the course could be completed over a period of 8 to 10 years.
