At a medical college in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, an unusual situation has arisen where three MBBS students have been enrolled for over two decades without successfully completing their studies. The college has even halted the release of results for these students, prompting legal intervention.
Details of the Students' Situation
The BRD Medical College is at the center of this case, with one student from the 1998 batch, another from 2009, and the last from 2010. Due to their repeated failures in examinations, the college stopped issuing results for them entirely. In light of this, one student sought legal recourse.
Legal Action Taken
Currently, these students are waiting for their final-year results. The college has justified its decision to withhold results by stating that the new regulations, which require completion of the course within ten years, do not apply to them as their cases began before 2020. Consequently, one student filed a petition with the High Court.
Court's Decision
The court's involvement led to the college releasing the results, but unfortunately, the student failed in two subjects again. This student will now have the chance to take supplementary exams, and the college is expected to announce results for the other two students soon.
Completion Timeline for MBBS Courses
As per the National Medical Commission (NMC), students who enrolled in MBBS courses in 2020 or later must finish their studies within nine years, which includes 4.5 years of academic coursework and a one-year mandatory internship.
For those admitted before 2020, the NMC (previously MCI) required completion within 5.5 years, with provisions allowing for an extension to 8 to 10 years in cases of failure or study gaps.
