Synopsis

In the 1970s, Mumtaz, a top Hindi cinema star, surprisingly left her flourishing career after marrying businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974. This decision echoed an earlier refusal of Shammi Kapoor's proposal, as she prioritized her ambitions over traditional expectations for married women in the Kapoor household.

During the 1970s, Mumtaz emerged as one of the most celebrated and bankable stars in Hindi cinema. With successful films such as Tere Mere Sapne and Roti, she enjoyed immense popularity and had firmly established herself among the industry’s top actresses. At the height of her success, however, she made a decision that astonished many—she chose to step away from her flourishing film career after tying the knot with businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974.

Interestingly, this was not the first time she had turned down marriage for the sake of her career. Earlier, she had declined a proposal from the legendary actor Shammi Kapoor. At that point in her life, agreeing to the marriage would have meant giving up acting entirely, a condition she was unwilling to accept as a young woman with aspirations and professional goals.

Speaking in a conversation with Sundeep Kochar, Mumtaz reflected on that phase of her life and explained that her youth and ambitions played a crucial role in her decision. She held great respect for Prithviraj Kapoor, whom she described as a kind and admirable person. However, within his household, there existed a long-standing expectation that daughters-in-law would not pursue careers after marriage. This tradition had been followed earlier by Geeta Bali, who had also stepped away from acting after marrying into the Kapoor family. Faced with such conditions, Mumtaz felt that she was too early in her journey to abandon her ambitions and therefore chose to walk away from the proposal.

Years later, when she married Madhvani, her path took a different turn. Although she personally wished to continue working in films for a longer period, she ultimately chose to honor her family’s traditional beliefs, which emphasized marriage at a certain stage in a woman’s life.

Before leaving the industry, Mumtaz ensured that she fulfilled her professional responsibilities. She returned advance payments for projects she could no longer undertake and completed the films she had already begun. Notably, her husband patiently waited for nearly two years, allowing her the time she needed to wrap up her commitments before she stepped into married life.
