Everything You Need to Know About the New ChatGPT Library Feature

The company is launching a new “Library” feature in its ChatGPT service, enabling users to easily store files in one place. The move is designed to make the service more convenient to use, especially for individuals working with files, images, and other forms of data in the chat service.

The Library feature was developed by OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, to make ChatGPT a more comprehensive service rather than just a chat service.

The Library feature in ChatGPT enables users to save files uploaded or created during conversations. This includes documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, images, and more.

The Library feature enables users to access all files in one place instead of having to search through past conversations or download files. The Library feature can be found in the left-hand sidebar in the web version of ChatGPT.

A Guide to the ChatGPT Library and Upload Limits

A search tool is provided to assist in filtering files based on types. You can choose to view only images or only spreadsheets. This is convenient and saves time, especially for users who need to deal with multiple files.

If you have sent a file in a chat or generated one through ChatGPT, it is stored in your Library. You do not need to save it manually.

If you need to reuse your file, you can choose “Add from Library” from the attachment menu. This eliminates the need to upload your file again. It is convenient and ensures consistency in your chats.

OpenAI has kept it simple. The idea is to ensure ease in dealing with files.

Library is not provided for all users. OpenAI has restricted Library for only paid users. The plans include ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business.

However, free users do not have access at this stage.

There are also regional limitations. The service is not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom. However, OpenAI has not indicated when the service will be available in these regions.

Currently, the Library service only works with the web version of ChatGPT. It is not available in the mobile app.

There are also limits to file upload, as indicated by OpenAI:

  • General files can be up to 512MB each
  • Images have a limit of 20MB per file
  • Spreadsheets and CSV files can reach up to 50MB, depending on the content

OpenAI has added basic controls to help users manage their data.

Data Privacy and Content Management

Users can also delete the files whenever they want. After the deletion of the file, the file is deleted from the account instantly. Within 30 days, the file is deleted from the OpenAI servers as well.

There is also an option through which the usage of the data can be controlled. If the users agree to the sharing of the data, the data can be used for the improvement of the model. If the users do not agree, they can simply turn the option off through the settings.

One interesting point is that the files shared in the Temporary Chats are not saved in the Library. This is done so that the users can use the platform without having the content saved.

The images generated are kept separate and continue to appear in the Images tab.

OpenAI has also taken care of the ads that might be shown in the platform. They have mentioned that the ads would not impact the responses given in the ChatGPT in any way.

ChatGPT’s Evolution into a Personal Digital Workspace

If the sponsored content is shown, it is kept separate and labeled clearly. This way, the responses can remain neutral while the company can still test the revenue options.

The Library feature represents a change in how ChatGPT is used. It is not just a question-and-answer platform anymore. It is becoming a place that allows users to create, store, and reuse information.

The implications are that it will be easier for a student to access their notes and assignments. It will be easier for a professional to access their documents and data. It will be more convenient for a regular user.

The feature is still not available to a lot of people, but it shows a direction that OpenAI is heading. They are working on tools that will allow ChatGPT to feel like a space and not a chatbot.
