Life beyond Manchester United has not exactly been smooth sailing for Anthony Martial. The French forward, who netted 90 times in 317 games for the club, has reportedly been excluded from first-team training at his current side, Monterrey.
This followed a visible outburst after he was left on the bench during their match against Chivas de Guadalajara last weekend. As reported by Mexican outlet TUDN, Martial was reportedly furious when youngster Joaquin Moxica was brought on ahead of him with 15 minutes remaining, at a time when Monterrey were trailing 3-0. Coaching staff noticed his angry reaction and relayed it to manager Nicolas Sanchez. As a consequence, Martial was instructed to train separately from the senior squad for the rest of the week.
Despite Martial's objections, the call appeared justified: Monterrey mounted a late comeback, scoring twice to narrow the scoreline to 3-2 and create a tense closing period. In the end, however, Guadalajara held on to claim the win.
It may not be surprising that Martial was passed over on Sunday considering his difficulties since arriving in Mexico. Since signing for Monterrey last September, the 30-year-old has scored just once in 21 matches.
Martial joined Old Trafford in 2015 for an initial fee of £36million - then a record amount for a teenager. With performance-related add-ons - including a now infamous Ballon d'Or clause - the total could have reached £57.6m, although United ultimately paid £44.7m.
His time in Manchester began in promising fashion, scoring against Liverpool on his debut. He finished that season with 17 goals in all competitions and appeared set to become the centerpiece of United's forward line.
However, frequent managerial turnover, inconsistent performances and repeated injury setbacks made it difficult for him to maintain form. In five of his nine seasons at Old Trafford, he failed to reach double figures in goals. His best campaign came in 2019/20, when he scored 23 times, but he managed only 19 goals combined over the following four seasons.
During the 2021/22 campaign, he was sent on loan to Sevilla after spending much of the season on the bench following the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. His stint in Spain proved underwhelming, as he scored just once in 12 appearances.
Martial's time at United officially ended in 2024 when he departed upon the expiration of his contract. He later signed with AEK Athens before eventually making the move to Monterrey a year afterward.
The French international needed 15 matches to score his first goal for Monterrey, finally doing so against relegation-threatened Mazatlan in a game where he also registered two assists. Since that performance, though, the goals have dried up again.
