A horrified witness has described the shocking scenes in Derby as a car ploughed into crowd on a busy street, leaving people "covered in blood". A man from India has been arrested and counter terrorism police are involved following the incident, which seriously injured seven people.

At about 9.30pm Saturday (March 28), Derbyshire Police confirmed that a black Suzuki Swift careered into crowds of people in the busy Friar Gate area of the city. One witness said it was "absolute carnage", with numerous people lying in the road and on the pavement, The Mirror reports.

They said: "It was utterly horrific. People were laying on the pavement covered in blood and on the road."

Seven people were treated by ambulances at the scene before being hospitalised with serious but not life-threatening injuries. There were no fatalities.

A police spokesperson said: "A man in his 30s, who is originally from India, was found a short time after the incident.

"He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving.

"He remains in police custody. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing and we are keeping an open mind as to the motives."

Derbyshire Police said detectives are leading the investigation with the support of counter terrorism officers, but it does not mean the incident is currently being treated as terrorism.

The force said in a statement: "Derbyshire detectives are leading the investigation with the support of Counter Terrorism Policing colleagues, which is common practice for an incident of this nature, and are keeping an open mind about the potential motives.

"Although counter terrorism officers are assisting us with those early investigations, this does not mean the incident is currently being treated as terrorism."
