If you're looking for a city break that won't break the bank, offers warm spring weather, and has flights so cheap they almost feel unreal, then this European city is the one for you. With average maximum daily temperatures in Tirana, Albania, increasing from 17C to 21C in April and direct flights from the UK starting at just £14.99, this underrated gem is perfect for travellers who want culture, history, and affordability all in one trip.
Often overlooked in favour of Albania's sun-soaked beaches, Tirana has quietly been making a name for itself as one of Europe's best budget city breaks. In 2025, Time Out ranked it at the top of their list of affordable European destinations, beating well-known spots like Zagreb, Kraków, and Sarajevo.
Flights from the UK make getting to Tirana surprisingly easy. At the time of writing, Ryanair is offering direct flights from London Stansted to Tirana for just £14.99 on dates including April 14, April 21, April 22, and April 28. Other budget airlines, such as Wizz Air, operate affordable routes to the Albanian capital, making it one of the cheapest city breaks in Europe this spring.
You can also fly direct to Tirana from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Luton, Liverpool, and Manchester.
Visitors can experience a wide range of sights from Ottoman-era mosques and communist-era bunkers to colourful street art, lively markets, beautiful parks, and breathtaking mountain vistas all located within a compact, walkable city.
Some of the city's highlights include Skanderbeg Square, the colourful Blloku district, Et'hem Bey Mosque, National History Museum, Bunk'Art bunkers, Mount Dajti views, Grand Park, the Pyramid, New Bazaar, and the capital's vibrant street art.
Another plus is that the food is affordable but also delicious food like byrek, fërgesë, tavë kosi, grilled meats and fresh seafood. A pint will cost you between just £2.2 according to Wise and Numbeo.
Sam Dawson, travel and food blogger and co-founder of Relentless Roaming, said the city is "Europe's most underrated capital."
She added: "For a truly unique and inspiring city break, Tirana is the ticket."
One TripAdvisor user also wrote about the Skanderbeg Square: "Don't be quick to dismiss Tirana from your travel list! You might just fall in love with this city, especially when you consider the profound impact that decades of communist rule had on it.
"Tirana is constantly transforming before our eyes, emerging from its concrete-grey past. This evolution is evident in its modern architecture and the vibrant burst of colours that are increasingly visible throughout the urban space.
"Skanderbeg Square, the heart of Tirana, is a prime example of this change. It's a vast, open space that perfectly encapsulates the city's journey from its challenging past to a more hopeful future. And this square, the heart of Albania, feels like the perfect place to summarise our own journey through this incredible country."
