Socks, sentimental jewellery and a specific pair of shoes are among thelucky charms Brits swear bywhen they want fortune on their side. A poll of 2,000 adults found 54% believe what they wear can directly influence their luck whether injob interviews(41%) or exams and tests(26%).
The research found 10% rely on a trusty pair of pants while 11% will go with anything, if it’s proven lucky in the past. More than one in five (22%) have even changed an outfit at the last minute because what they were already wearing felt ‘unlucky’.
It turns out one in 10 (11%) associate the colour green with winning and good fortune, with black and brown most associated as unlucky clothing colours.

The research was commissioned by The Birthday Draw, where entrants can choose a colour, date and an initial to create their entry and could win a £1 million jackpot.
More than half (55%) of those polled believe a lucky outfit makes them feel more in control, according to the OnePoll.com data. Around one in four (27%) have attributed a success or win directly to what they were wearing at the time.
With 47%, at one point or another, having won a competition or prize purely based on luck, and not skill, as 31% consider themselves lucky in general.
The study found that of those with a lucky item of clothing, 30% have avoided washing it in case they ‘washed the luck away’. As many as one in 10 of these have stretched this process out and have avoided putting their lucky charm in the wash for longer than two weeks.
The research discovered three quarters claim that what they wear can directly impact their confidence. With the same percentage (76%) saying feeling confident improves their chances of success overall.
Nikki Cooper, spokesperson for The Birthday Draw, added: “It’s no surprise that many believe their outfit choices can influence their luck, be it wearing a certain colour or personalised jewellery.
“These small rituals provide a huge boost in confidence and a sense of control that make us feel extra lucky.”
