New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were brutally roasted on social media as Rajasthan Royals (RR) hammered them by eight wickets in their opening game of the season at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Monday, March 30. Vaibhav Sooryvanshi smashed a 17-ball 52 after a terrific show from the bowlers to help RR register an emphatic win and start the season on a high.

It was a forgetful night for CSK as their batting suffered a spectacular collapse after they were invited to bat first amid overcast conditions in Guwahati. With the talismanic MS Dhoni out of the XI due to an injury, CSK were hoping for a strong start under captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, there were glimpses of last season as CSK’s batting line-up fell like a pack of cards.

RR pacers Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger made the most of the seaming conditions to make early inroads. Burger cleaned up Sanju Samson cheaply on six, before Archer got rid of Gaikwad to send the CSK openers back into the hunt inside the first three overs. Ayush Mhatre was sent back on a duck as CSK lost three wickets in no time.

Sarfaraz Khan and young debutant Kartik Sharma led a brief resistance, but it didn’t last long as Ravindra Jadeja struck twice in his first over to peg CSK back further. Jadeja trapped Sarfaraz lbw on 17 off 12 and removed Shivam Dube cheaply on 6 to break the back of CSK’s batting line-up.

There was no coming back for the five-time champions after they lost half their side for 51 runs in just 8 overs. Jamie Overton led the fightback with a gritty 43 off 36 balls and shared a 33-run stand for the last wicket with Anshul Kamboj (7) to help CSK reach a respectable total of 127/10 in 20 overs.

As CSK batters put on a disaster class in Guwahati, fans took to social media to poke fun at the franchise’s downfall with some hilarious memes. Some compared CSK’s batting failure to their struggles last season, while others took a dig at the franchise’s sharp downfall, comparing them to Premier League giants Manchester United.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi rubs salt into CSK’s wounds

CSK were never in the game after getting bowled out for 127 runs, but Sooryavnshi made the chase a lop-sided affair with a quickfire fifty, rubbing salt into their wounds. Opening the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sooryavanshi played in his natural aggressive manner and got his team off to a flyer. He notched up his fifty off just 15 balls and finished with a cracking 52 off just 17 balls, laced with five sixes and 4 fours.
