Live-in Relationships | An important change has been made in the census to be held in 2027 by the Modi government at the Centre. Now couples living in a live-in relationship will also be counted as ‘married’. A couple who consider their relationship stable will be considered as a married couple. Until now, only legally married people were recorded as ‘married’ in the census. However, now live-in couples will also be recognized as married.

The census will be digital in nature, where citizens will be able to update their information online. The household-list phase of the census asks 33 questions, including the number of married couples in the household. This phase will be from 1st April to 30th September and the entire duration will be 45 days. The first 15 days of this are reserved for citizens to self-enumerate, where they can fill the household details themselves. During the remaining 30 days, a physical enumerator visits the house and verifies the information. Live-in Relationships

Citizens do not have to show any proof for answers given during self-enumeration; Answer based on your knowledge and belief only. Enumerators are required to record the information provided by citizens as it is. There is a large number of people living in live-in in the country. Registering them as married will provide more accurate population and marital status statistics to the government.

Self-enumeration will begin from April 1 in Delhi’s NDMC area. Citizens can fill their information on a special web portal, which is available in 15 Indian languages including English. Head of household or any responsible adult member can fill the form. It is very important to write down the exact location of the house – town/city, street, zip code, and nearby landmarks. The marker must be placed on the correct house on the map; If misplaced, it will be difficult for enumerators to find the information. Live-in Relationships

While filling the form you can fill it step by step within 15 days and also save it as a draft. After submitting the form SE ID will be generated, which has to be given to the enumerator, which can verify the house and information. It takes about 15-20 minutes to fill the form. Once the form is submitted or the self-calculation period is over, changes can only be made by the enumerator. This portal is available for use in India only and all information is encrypted on secure government servers.
