Mangaluru: With the objective of upgrading the infrastructure of New Mangalore Port (NMP) and strengthening maritime logistics, the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved the proposal to redevelop NMP's Jetty No. 9 for handling liquid bulk cargo. This is intended to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The existing Jetty No. 9 will be dismantled and comprehensively redeveloped. It will be reconstructed specifically to handle crude oil, petroleum products, and LPG. As part of the modernization, the depth of the berth will be increased from the current 10.5 meters to 14 meters. The design will allow for a future expansion to a depth of 19.5 meters. Through this, it will be developed to support and manage the largest oil and gas tankers carrying up to 2 lakh metric tonnes.
Cost of Rs 438.29 crore This modernization will be undertaken in private partnership at a total cost of Rs 438.29 crore. An open competitive tender process will be held for this purpose. It will be developed for an annual handling capacity of 10.94 million tonnes. Private development partners will guarantee a minimum of 7.63 million metric tonnes of cargo by the 5th year. The construction period will be 2 years, and the lease period will be 30 years.
Improved safety system The 50-year-old jetty will be replaced by this new system. The new construction is designed to last for 50 years. Logistics costs will decrease as larger ships arrive. The overall competitiveness of the port will increase, and operational efficiency will also rise. For this purpose, mechanization such as high-capacity marine unloading arms and automated mooring systems will be implemented.
The project includes advanced firefighting systems, nitrogen generation skids, and integrated control systems, which will provide safety in handling hazardous liquid cargo.
Global maritime leader Speaking about this project in Delhi, Minister of Shipping and Ports Sarbananda Sonowal stated that India's maritime infrastructure is being modernized as part of Prime Minister Modi's vision. Old infrastructure is being removed to build world-class facilities in its place. This will enable the handling of large vessels, which will make India a global maritime leader in the future.
