One European seaside city that is constantly named one of the best in the world has been revealed to have more tourists than locals. Global car rental comparison site DiscoverCars compared the number of touriststo the number of locals in cities around in Europe.

They've looked into how many tourists are visiting these popular cities per 100 locals. Topping their list is Dubrovnik in Croatia, which is only a few hours flight away from the UK. Famous as the set for Game of Thrones' King's Landing, this coastal gem saw 6.5 million visitors last year. With just 40,000 residents, that's a massive 16,250 tourists per 100 locals.

The UNESCO World Heritage gem, famously known as the 'Pearl of the Adriatic,' allows visitors to walk through medieval streets and along pristine city walls safely. It's known for its distinctive Old Town, encircled with massive stone walls completed in the 16th century.

Its well-preserved buildings range from baroque St. Blaise Church to Renaissance Sponza Palace and Gothic Rector's Palace, now a museum. The pedestrianised high street, Stradun (or Placa), is paved with limestone and lined with shops and restaurants.

Many of the historic buildings and monuments in Dubrovnik are situated along the street, meaning it is a popular esplanade for tourists

Dubrovnik is also a popular spot for TV and film. Parts of Star Wars: The Last Jedi were filmed in Dubrovnik in March 2016, in which the city was used as the setting for the casino city of Canto Bight.

Despite the buzz, it's remarkably affordable to escape the crowds; a rental car costs just £37 for a week in April, giving you total freedom to explore the stunning Pelješac wine region and the Dalmatian coastline.

Coming in second place was Reykjavik, Iceland. The city had 7.4 million visitors last year: with a population of only 140,000, this is a huge 5,286 tourists per 100 locals.

As well as exploring the centre of Iceland's enchanting capital city, tourists could spot the Northern Lights, and soak in the Blue Lagoon thermal baths on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Coming in third place was Venice, Italy. With 4,240 international visitors for every 100 locals, as "the Floating City" had 10.6 million tourists compared to a population of 250,000.

Its gorgeous architecture and the chance to explore its canals by gondola make it a very popular destination. Hiring a car for a week would cost £86, making it easier to take day trips to nearby cities like Treviso, the birthplace of tiramisu.
