Bengaluru/Mangaluru: Bajpe police have arrested an interstate thief from Tamil Nadu in connection with a temple theft case reported earlier this month.
The accused has been identified as Shabik Ahmed Sheikh Abdul Khader (25), a resident of Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu.
According to police, the theft took place on March 3 at Sri Ramanjaneya Temple in Kenjaru village under the Bajpe police station limits. The accused allegedly broke open the temple door, entered the premises and stole around Rs 25,000 kept in three hundis (donation boxes).
A case had been registered following the incident. Taking the matter seriously, police formed a special team to trace the accused.
Based on credible information, the team conducted a raid on March 31 and arrested the accused. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to committing the theft at the Kenjaru temple. Police also recovered the stolen hundi from his possession.
Officials said the accused is involved in multiple theft cases, including incidents reported in Udupi and Panambur.
Police further revealed that the accused used to travel from Tamil Nadu by train, commit thefts, and return immediately to evade arrest.
The operation was carried out under the leadership of Bajpe Police Inspector Balakrishna, along with crime staff members Nuthan, Rajesh and Prakash.
The accused has been produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
