New Delhi: The FCRA Amendment Bill is a “shocking government overreach”, and not a “regulation”, but “control”, TMC Rajya Sabha deputy leader Sagarika Ghose said on Tuesday.
In a post on X, the TMC leader called the bill “draconian” and a “cruel takeover of faith.”
“The FCRA Amendment Bill being brought by the Narendra Modi government tomorrow in the Lok Sabha is a shocking government overreach, giving the Modi government power to seize civil society institutions built over decades,” the TMC leader said.
“This is not regulation, it’s control. And let’s be honest, many of those targeted are Christian-run schools, hospitals, and charities serving the most vulnerable and needy. The Bill is a draconian and cruel takeover of faith, service, and civil society as a whole,” she said.
Bill introduced in Lok Sabha
The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai last week.
The bill entails a comprehensive statutory framework for vesting, supervision, management, and disposal of foreign contributions and assets through a ‘designated authority’, including provisional and permanent vesting.
The bill stands to significantly tighten the government’s oversight of foreign-funded organisations with the creation of a powerful new authority.
