Medical education will now also be offered at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). IIT Kharagpur is set to launch a postgraduate medical program. The institute has already commenced preparations for this initiative. In this regard, IIT Kharagpur has drafted a proposal, which has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Health and the National Medical Commission (NMC) for approval. Once approval is granted, the first batch of medical students will begin their studies at IIT Kharagpur. Consequently, IIT Kharagpur will become the first IIT in the country to offer a medical course.

Postgraduate Medical Course to Commence with 20 Seats
IIT Kharagpur is set to introduce a postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) course. This program will launch with an intake capacity of 20 seats. A formal proposal regarding this initiative has been submitted by IIT Kharagpur. Providing details on the matter, IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty stated that the formal process for obtaining approval from the NMC has already been initiated, and the institute is now awaiting a response from the concerned ministry. He further noted that while the Union Ministry of Education has endorsed the proposal to launch the medical course, the final decision rests with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

20 Doctors Appointed as Faculty
Speaking on the efforts to launch the postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) course at IIT Kharagpur, Director Suman Chakraborty revealed, "We have already appointed 20 doctors to serve as faculty members and teach students enrolled in the MD program." He added that the proposal was presented to the institute's Board of Governors for approval on September 23, 2025, and has subsequently been forwarded to the Ministry of Health for final clearance.

Admission to be Based on NEET Scores
Admission to the upcoming postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) course at IIT Kharagpur will be granted based on NEET scores. Furthermore, students admitted to this program will receive training in the healthcare facilities of the Dr. B.C. Roy Multi-Specialty Medical Research Centre and the Syama Prasad Mukherjee Super Specialty Hospital. To this end, IIT Kharagpur plans to expand the Syama Prasad Hospital. The hospital will be transformed into a 220-bed ‘mission-mode’ IPD facility.
