Google has introduced a long-awaited update for Gmail users. With this new update, users will now be able to change the portion of their Gmail username that appears before the '@' symbol. Google originally launched the Gmail service on April 1, 2004; this change arrives more than two decades after the service's initial launch.

Available to Users in This Country
Google has made this username-changing feature in Gmail available to users residing in the US. In a blog post, Google stated that the facility to change usernames is now available to all Google Account users in the US. This change represents a long-pending fix for Gmail users.

Coinciding with the 22nd anniversary of Gmail's launch on April 1st, this update allows users to change their username while continuing to use their existing Google Account and associated services. It is expected that the company will gradually roll out this feature to other countries as well, and Indian users may receive access to it soon.

Changing Your Gmail Username: Here's How
To change your Gmail account username, open your email settings. Next, navigate to the "Google Account email" option within the "Email" section under "Personal info." If this option is available for your account, you will see the settings interface to change your Google Account email address. This change applies only to accounts with an @gmail.com address, which can be switched to a different @gmail.com address.

Please Note
Once changed, the old address becomes a secondary email address; therefore, you will continue to receive emails sent to that address. Account data—including photos, messages, and emails—remains unaffected. Users can revert to their old address at any time, but they cannot create a *different* new Gmail address for 12 months after making a change.
