Patna: A Muslim woman allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday, March 31, in Bihar’s Rohtas district by consuming poison along with her two minor children, reportedly due to the continued harassment and trauma from her husband’s mob lynching.

The incident took place under the jurisdiction of the Mufassil police station in Moradabad village, Rohtas district.

The deceased, identified as Reshma Khatoon, allegedly took poison late Monday, March 30, at her home. Her four-year-old daughter, Taiyba, and her one-year-old son, Hamza, were also found to have consumed the toxic substance.

The neighbors grew suspicious when no movement occurred inside the house for a long time. They decided to check on them when an unconscious Reshma and her two children were discovered.

The deceased and her children were rushed to a private clinic in Raj Colony, Sasaram, and later transferred to Varanasi for advanced treatment after their condition worsened. Reshma died while undergoing treatment, while her two children remain critical.

Rohtas Superintendent of Police Roshan Kumar confirmed Reshma’s death.

The incident comes days after the deceased’s husband, 32-year-old Hasan Raza Khan, was lynched by a mob on March 24 over a land dispute.

The accused reportedly tied his hands, dragged him on the highway, and beat him to death publicly.

Of the eight accused, four have been arrested at the time of publication. Reshma’s family alleged that they were living in constant dread and received threats from the other accused individuals.

A bystander who recorded the incident was also reportedly threatened. The family maintains that trauma from the incident drove Reshma to take such extreme measures, although police have yet to confirm the cause.

Dr Chitranjan Singh, from the private clinic, told Times of India that Reshma and her children had consumed pesticide.

Arrest warrants have been obtained for the remaining accused, and a search is underway to arrest them, the SP said.
