On Friday, Iran announced that it had taken a US pilot into custody after allegedly downing an American fighter jet, possibly an F-15E, in Central Iran, heightening regional tensions. Iranian state media reported that the pilot had ejected over southwestern Iran. Following this news, local media called on residents to assist in locating and capturing the pilot.
In a concerning development, an Iranian state channel encouraged citizens to turn in any 'enemy pilot' to the authorities, offering a reward for such actions. This appeal was broadcast in Kohkilouyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province, a largely rural and mountainous area covering over 15,500 square kilometers (5,900 square miles). An earlier message on the channel urged the public to 'shoot them if you see them,' referencing social media videos that seemed to show US aircraft in the vicinity.
As locals flocked to the crash site of the downed fighter jet in private vehicles, the Iranian military urged the public to ensure the pilot's safety and prevent any mistreatment. While multiple reports indicate that the pilot has been captured, official confirmation from Iranian authorities, CENTCOM, or the Pentagon is still pending.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, now in its sixth week, is causing significant economic instability globally. In retaliation to US and Israeli strikes, Iran has been targeting energy infrastructure in the Gulf region and tightening control over oil and natural gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump has stated that American forces will continue to apply pressure on Iran 'very hard' in the coming weeks.
