In a decisive effort to upgrade cancer care in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann today paid a surprise visit to the Advanced Cancer Institute at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) and ordered comprehensive improvement of infrastructure, technology and human resources. He also said that there will be no compromise in the standards of treatment.
Giving clear directions for the transformation, the Chief Minister announced that the institute will be developed into a world-class health care center with the introduction of advanced facilities including robotic surgery and immediate steps will be taken to strengthen the recruitment of staff, with the aim of significantly enhancing the care of patients in the Malwa region.
During a surprise visit to the hospital, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann took stock of the functioning of the institution and interacted with key stakeholders to assess the ground realities and identify areas requiring immediate attention. He stressed, ‘The purpose of this visit is to support and strengthen the institution, and not to find shortcomings. The broader objective of the visit is to transform it into a major health care center for the entire state.
The Chief Minister confirmed, ‘The Advanced Cancer Institute at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) will be equipped with world-class facilities. This hospital is already providing quality health care services to the patients of Malwa region and it is our endeavor to further strengthen it as a leading health care center in the entire Punjab.
Emphasizing the need for continuous upgradation, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said, ‘The purpose of this visit is not to find faults, but to develop this institute as a premier health care center across the state. During the visit, I interacted with all the key stakeholders to make them aware of the ground realities and needs of this important institution.
Focusing on improving the treatment of patients, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced that many important facilities will be started in the institute. He said, ‘Concrete efforts will be made to ensure the health of patients by starting many facilities. Robotic surgery will also be started in this hospital so that patients can benefit on a larger scale.
Emphasizing the need to modernize treatment methods, he further said, ‘Necessary steps will be taken as soon as possible to start robotic surgery in this hospital and no stone will be left unturned in this.’
On staff concerns, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the hospital is currently facing staff shortage. He assured immediate action. He said, ‘I have come to know that there is a shortage of staff in the hospital, therefore, in the larger public interest, necessary steps will be taken to recruit additional staff.’
Reaffirming the Punjab government’s commitment towards accessible health care, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said, ‘Ayushman card holders and Mukhyamantri Swasthya Yojana beneficiaries are entitled to treatment at this best cancer care hospital. The Punjab government is committed to providing quality health services to all the people of the state.
