Bharatiya Janata Party, intensifying its preparations for the West Bengal Assembly elections, announced the names of five new candidates on Saturday evening. The party’s aim is to remove Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) from power. Elections in the state are to be held in two phases. BJP is entering the field with full force.

Change in candidates on three seats

According to the new list, tickets have been given to Taraknath Chatterjee from Krishnanagar North, Anupam Biswas from Kalyani, Saurav Sikdar from Dumdum North, Anindya Raju Banerjee from Madhyamgram and Rudraprasad Banerjee from Uluberia Purba. Along with this, the party has also made changes in the candidates on three seats. Now Kaushik Siddharth will contest from Basirhat North, Abhijeet Sardar from Bishnupur and Shankar Sikdar from Behala Purba.

With these announcements, BJP has announced the names of a total of 292 candidates. Earlier, names of 144 candidates had appeared in the first list released on March 16, in which Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram and Dilip Ghosh from Kharagpur were fielded. Apart from this, Agnimitra Paul from Asansol South and Swapan Dasgupta from Rashbehari were also made candidates.

The second list was released on March 19.

After this, the second list was released on March 19, which included the names of 111 candidates. In this list, former Union Minister Nishit Pramanik was made the candidate from Mathabhanga, Dibendu Adhikari from Egra and Shankar Adhikari from Chopra. The third and fourth lists were released on March 25 and 31 respectively, in which the names of 19 and 13 candidates were declared. On the other hand, TMC has already fielded its candidates on all 294 seats.

The main objective of BJP is to remove the TMC government which has been in power since 2011. In the 2016 elections, BJP had to be content with only three seats, but in 2021, the party performed remarkably by winning 77 seats and emerged as the main opposition party. In the same election, Suvendu Adhikari had given a big political message by defeating Mamata Banerjee on Nandigram seat.

This time voting in the state will be held on 23rd and 29th April, while counting of votes will be done on 4th May. The electoral contest is expected to be tough and all the parties are trying to woo the public with their respective strategies.
